How to Install Transport Fever 3 Mods: Start to Finish

Install TF3 mods through Mod Hub or an author package, activate them for your world, resolve dependencies, and check that the content actually works.

Updated Oct 11, 2026 · Based on official manuals and public tutorials, with key material rechecked. Version differences are noted; not individually playtested.

Learning how to install Transport Fever 3 mods involves two separate jobs: obtaining the package and activating it for the world you want to play. A successful download does not prove that an existing save uses the addition. Start with one clearly identified TF3 release and verify its effect before building a collection.

Choose the installation route

The official FAQ confirms that the shared in-game browser uses mod.io and that TF3 does not include Steam Workshop. Steam, Epic, GOG and console players should begin with Mod Hub. Searching your old TF2 Workshop subscriptions is a different workflow and will not install their TF3 counterparts.

On a computer, an author may also supply a manual package. Use that route only when the release explicitly supports TF3 and the author describes how to install it. A source repository, a development package and a finished downloadable release are not interchangeable. If the listing says to use the in-game installer, follow that instruction rather than trying to reconstruct a package from cached files.

Before downloading, record the author, exact listing title, supported platforms, dependencies and current revision. This gives you a reliable way to identify the same item later, even if a translated display name differs.

How to install Transport Fever 3 mods through Mod Hub

  1. Open Mod Hub from the main menu and complete any sign-in or consent steps it presents. Search by the author's exact title, rather than a broad vehicle name.
  2. Read the listing's requirements and supported platforms. Download or subscribe using the control shown in your current version; wait until the item is available locally.
  3. Start a small Free Game. In the Add Mods tab, use Activate for the intended addition. These labels are documented in the Free Game manual.
  4. Read dependency and incompatibility warnings before starting. If a required package is offered for download, obtain it and check that the warning has cleared.
  5. Launch the test world and look for the promised result in the appropriate place. A map belongs in map selection; a locomotive belongs in its supported depot and availability period.

For an existing save, first make a separate copy. The manual describes opening the save card's settings to adjust its active mod list when the save allows editing. A disabled Load Game button can indicate a missing mod. Do not overwrite the working save while investigating that warning.

Install an author's manual package

Use the mods subdirectory inside TF3's userdata directory, not the game's installation files or the managed mod.io download location. Our folder guide lists the official store and operating-system paths.

Extract the release so its actual mod directory is inside that location. Check the author's layout against TF3's documented structure: mod.json defines the package and content holds resources. Some source releases require a build step; an arbitrary repository ZIP may not be ready to run. If the author provides separate source and release downloads, choose the release.

Do not add a TF2-style version suffix or manufacture a mod.lua to make the folder look familiar. TF3's Mod Definition documentation uses modId from mod.json to identify the package. Return to the game's mod list and activate the item for your test world after placing it correctly.

Verify the installation before expanding

Keep the first test small enough to answer one question: does this addition produce its documented effect? For a vehicle, check the purchase menu, buy one suitable model, and run a short line. For a construction helper, try the smallest supported build. For a map generator, generate a preview with its stated settings.

Save the test, exit and reload it. Record the game build, mod revision, required packages and observed result. If the clean test works but your main world does not, installation has probably succeeded; investigate that world's settings or combination of mods instead of repeatedly downloading the same package.

Common questions about how to install Transport Fever 3 mods

Can I use Steam Workshop? No TF3 Workshop is included according to the official FAQ. Use the integrated browser or an author's supported manual release.

Can I copy my TF2 collection? The developer says TF2 mods require adaptation. A familiar model name does not establish compatibility; find the author's TF3 release.

Is downloading enough? Check the world's active list separately. Installed content that is absent from a menu belongs in the visibility checklist.

Where should I start if the process stops? When deciding how to install Transport Fever 3 mods, identify whether the failure is downloading, activation or world loading. Use the specific guide below instead of changing all three at once.
