Transport Fever 3 Low FPS: Graphics Settings or Simulation Bottleneck?

Use a repeatable paused-versus-running test to investigate TF3 low FPS, graphics load and late-game slowdown before changing hardware or deleting a save.

For Transport Fever 3 low FPS, first compare the same scene paused and running. If the paused scene is also slow, investigate graphics load. If simulation speed is the main problem, record world complexity and CPU behavior. This comparison is a diagnostic starting point, not proof of one bottleneck by itself.

01 / Make a repeatable performance record

Pick one save, one camera position, one resolution and one simulation speed. Record your hardware, game version and active mods. Then note frame rate and whether vehicle movement is smooth in both paused and running states.

Repeat the same short observation after every change. A busy station at close range and an empty corner of the map are different workloads; comparing them would hide the effect of the setting you changed. Avoid benchmarking while a save is still loading or while several other applications are starting.

02 / When the paused scene is slow, start with graphics

Urban Games recommends a lower graphics preset, lower resolution scale or a lower display resolution for poor frame rates even while paused. The official troubleshooting manual also discusses GPU and video-memory usage. Common performance issues · Troubleshooting manual.

Change one setting, return to the same scene and compare the result. Keep a readable interface rather than choosing the smallest resolution indiscriminately. Record visual trade-offs alongside the frame rate so the final setting suits the way you play.

03 / When time acceleration stops helping, check simulation load

The manual describes a different symptom: increasing simulation speed has little effect, or vehicles begin to jump. It identifies large, developed transport worlds as potential CPU-limited workloads and recommends checking individual CPU cores as well as GPU usage. Official bottleneck guidance.

Treat that as a hypothesis to test. Note towns, vehicle count, network complexity and the difference between a new small game and your established save. Do not infer “the CPU is fine” solely from an average usage percentage. A cheaper graphics preset may improve rendering without making simulation advance faster.

04 / Check the installed version before applying old advice

The official release notes list Steam version 40420 on October 8, 2026 with rendering, HUD and video-memory improvements. The accompanying announcement says the update does not resolve every issue. These are dated release details, not a claim that this version remains the latest indefinitely. Release notes · Stability update announcement.

Check the version your storefront actually installed, then reproduce the issue again. Keep your original measurements: otherwise a patch, changed graphics preset and altered mod set may all be credited to the same adjustment.

05 / Use a safe comparison for mods and background tasks

Try a new small game with a known mod set, then compare with the affected save. For a mod-dependent world, create a separate copy before changing its requirements; a clean new world is the safer first comparison.

Close unnecessary background work and check power settings as suggested by the official support page. Change only one variable per comparison. A difference associated with mods is a reason to investigate dependencies and updates, not evidence that every mod causes lag. See our mod compatibility checklist for that separate task.

06 / Turn observations into the next action

Keep a simple log: test scene, paused/running state, setting changed, observed FPS, simulation behavior and any new errors. Restore the earlier setting when the change does not help.

If the issue persists, prepare the same details and a reproducible save for official support. This guide does not provide a measured FPS uplift or a universal hardware recommendation. For future games, choose world settings you can sustain; our map-size calculator compares areas, but it cannot predict performance from area alone. For a vehicle that is slow while the game itself runs smoothly, check vehicle maintenance instead.
